Australia welcomed a death sentence meted out to former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, saying that it is a sign of democratic hope for Iraq. Prime Minister John Howard said that the sentence against the former authoritarian Iraqi leader was a signal of Iraq's need for democracy.
Howard told the Australian Nine Network that "there's something heroic about a nation that is going through all the pain and difficulty as Iraq is, yet still struggles to give this monster a fair trial - that is the mark of a country that desperately wants democracy."
