Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel, in a speech at the EU-African summit, emphasised the importance of good governance, human rights, the democratic process and the rule of law. He said also that the abolition of the death penalty and torture had to be a central issue in the EU-African partnership, along with the equal treatment of men and women and the effective protection of children's rights.
