BANGLADESH: 4 GET DEATH PENALTY FOR KILLING RANGPUR BUSINESSMAN

A Rangpur court sentenced four people to death and another one to three years’ imprisonment over the killing of a businessman in 2012.
The condemned convicts are—Sherajul Islam, Jewel, Shahin Miah and Shujon Miah. All except Sherajul Islam were tried in absentia.
Alam alias Aslam received 3-year jail sentence. He was also fined Tk 5,000.
According to the prosecution, Shahidul Islam Jewel Mia, owner of ‘Dina Studio’, was found dead in Jalalganj Nilkunthi of Mithapukur upazila on 24 August 2012, having left his residence receiving a phone call.
Victim’s brother Altaf Hossain filed a case with Pirgachha police, and following an investigation, police submitted a chargesheet against the convicts.
Having examining the available evidence, records and witnesses, Additional District and Session Judge Abu Zafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman handed down the verdict.
