Bangladesh executed five former military officers for their role in the 1975 massacre of the country's independence leader and several of his relatives and aides at a Dhaka home during a coup, authorities said.
The five men, who were all at least in their 60s, had been convicted in 1998 of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's killing and had final appeals of their sentences rejected by the Supreme Court on January 27.
The five men were hanged at Dhaka Central Jail. Sultan Shahriar Rashid, Syed Farooq Rahman, AKM Mohiuddin, Bazlul Huda and Mohiuddin Ahmed were walked to the gallows, handcuffed and their heads covered in black hoods, Dhaka Deputy Commissioner Zillar Rahman said.
The men were allowed to meet with family members inside the jail amid tight security ahead of their hangings, which took place one after another and lasted about 30 minutes, private TV station ATN Bangla said.
The bodies were sent to their village homes.
