Bangladesh: Man sentenced to death for killing child after rape attempt in Ctg

A Chattogram additional metropolitan sessions judge court on Nov. 5, 2026 sentenced a man to death for murdering an eight-year-old boy after failing to rape him in the city’s Patenga area in 2018.

The condemned convict is identified as Emon Hossain, 38, a rickshaw-puller from Bhola district who lived in the East Ahmed Para area under Patenga police station in city.

Additional metropolitan sessions judge Nishkriti Hagidok pronounced the verdict in the sensational murder case, said court bench assistant Mohammad Omar Fuad.

The court also fined Emon Tk 20,000, in default of which he will have to serve one year of imprisonment.

Omar Fuad said that Emon had gone into hiding after securing bail during the trial. As he was absent when the verdict was delivered, the judge issued a death warrant and an arrest warrant against him.

According to court records and Emon’s confessional statement, his family and the victim’s family were neighbours in Patenga. The victim was the son of a rickshaw-puller.

On March 8, 2018, at around 11:30am, Emon saw the victim playing while returning home after driving his rickshaw. He lured the child with an offer of jujube fruit and took him to an abandoned house on Chairman Goli.

There, Emon attempted to rape the boy, but he resisted and threatened to inform his mother about the incident.

Fearing that his offence would be exposed, Emon struck the child’s head with a broken brick lying inside the house. When the child fell to the ground and began struggling in pain, Emon repeatedly struck his head and forehead until he died.

After ensuring the child’s death, Emon fled the scene.

Police recovered the child’s body from the abandoned house in the afternoon on the same day. The victim’s father filed a murder case with Patenga police station.

Police arrested Emon on the same day. He later confessed to the crime before a magistrate under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Five months after the murder, on August 8, investigation officer and Patenga police sub-inspector Zakir Hossain submitted a charge sheet against Emon.

After framing charges and recording statements from 12 witnesses, the court delivered the verdict on Nov. 5.
