A Chittagong court has sentenced a man to death for the murder of his wife.
The Chittagong Additional District and Sessions Judge’s court announced the verdict against Fatikchhari Upazila resident Md Ilias in the 2011 murder on October 22.
Ilias, who was present in court at the time of the verdict, was sent to jail.
According to the case documents, Ilias was married to his cousin Safia Begum in 2011. Ilias strangled her with a rope on Oct 14, 2011.
Safia’s father, Md Rafiq, filed a case against Ilias at Bhujpur Police Station.
Ilias later confessed to the court that while he had a romantic relationship with Safia he had no intention of marrying her and had only done so under pressure from his neighbours.
Police submitted the chargesheet in the case on Dec 18, 2011 and Ilias was indicted on Sept 1, 2013, said Additional Public Prosecutor Samir Das Gupta.
