Bangladesh: Two sentenced to death for rape, murder of teenage girl

A court in Habiganj on September 13, 2026 sentenced two men to death for raping and murdering a teenage girl in Nabiganj upazila, Habiganj, in 2021.
Judge Syeda Minhaj Um Munira of Habiganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 handed down the verdict around 3:00pm in the presence of the convicts -- Khalil Uddin and Golam Hossain.
Both convicts were also fined Tk 20,000.
State counsel Advocate Kamal Uddin Selim said the body of victim, Juba Akter, was recovered from a plot of land in Harinagar on December 27, 2021.
Juba’s father later filed a case with Nabiganj Police Station, which was later transferred to the Habiganj Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
Three days after the incident, Khalil gave a confessional statement before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Police later arrested Golam.
The prosecution said Juba died during the rape. Her throat was then slit to ensure her death and conceal the crime. The accused also tied her hands and feet and left her body on the plot.
Fourteen prosecution witnesses testified during the trial. After examining the evidence and documents, the tribunal handed down the death sentences and fines.
