BOTSWANA HAS NATIONAL PROCEDURES FOR EXECUTIONS- MINISTER

the Minister of Labour and Home Affairs in Botswana, Peter Siele, told Parliament that the role of executioner had not been localised. “There are officials who execute court orders relating to prisoners sentenced to death. The procedure for execution is laid down in the (national) Prison’s Act,” he said. A female prison officer had complained to Siele about executing inmates that they had bonded with. Gaborone South MP Akanyang Magama asked if it was traumatic for warders “whose core business is to rehabilitate prisoners, to again be called upon to execute them.” Siele said the Department of Prisons and rehabilitation has a continuous counselling programme for officials involved.
