The commutation was at the request of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, an official of the Department of Foreign Affairs said. Arroyo requested the commutation of the death sentence of Edgar Puzon in a meeting with Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, foreign affairs undersecretary Esteban Conejos Jr. said. Puzon was sentenced to death in 2003 for the murder of another Filipino worker in Brunei. The sentence was upheld in 2007.
