Bulgaria's justice minister said he feared that six Bulgarian medics on trial in Libya for allegedly infecting hundreds of children with HIV could be sentenced to death if found guilty.
A Libyan court is due to announce its verdict in the trial of the six Bulgarians and a Palestinian doctor on September 22.
"I want to underline that we have no reasons to be optimistic about the trial," Justice Minister Anton Stankov told reporters.
It was the first time Sofia had openly voiced concerns about possible death penalties for the five female nurses and one male doctor charged with intentionally infecting 393 children in a Benghazi hospital with blood products contaminated with the HIV virus.
