Canada supported Bulgaria in connection with the trial against the Bulgarian medics in Libya, Paul Dubois, Assistant Deputy Minister at the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said after a meeting with Bulgarian Deputy Foreign Minister Gergana Gruncharova. A Libyan court imposed death sentences on five Bulgarian nurses on charges of infecting over 400 Libyan children with AIDS. As Dubois put it, the issue of the Bulgarian medics was not only an issue of Bulgaria and Libya but of the whole international community. Dubois further said that immediately after the sentences were pronounced, the Canadian side contacted the Libyan Charge d'Affaires in Ottawa and voiced its concern.
