A multiparty constitution inaugurated in 1996 retained the death penalty. In 1996, President Idriss Deby, on occasion of his investiture, commuted all death sentences pronounced in 1994 and 1995 to life imprisonment.
Chad had not executed anyone since 1991, but, in the space of three days in 2003, nine people were put to death.
No executions were registered in the country in 2004.
On December 18, 2008 and December 21st, 2010, Chad was absent during the vote on the Resolution on a Moratorium on the Use of the Death Penalty at the UN General Assembly.
