Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan demanded an end to the death penalty during a visit to death row inmates at the Seoul Detention Center in Gyeonggi province.
The cardinal spoke to about 150 prisoners, including seven who are sentenced to die.
"The arguments for and against capital punishment are both legitimate, but because it violates human dignity, it is only right that it be abolished," Mr. Kim said.
Cardinal Kim said the death penalty is akin to state-sponsored murder, noting that its effectiveness in reducing crime is dubious.
"We are very comforted by the cardinal's words," one of the death row inmates said. "He reminded us of life's dignity."
"We will dutifully pay for the sin of having taken lives," another inmate said, expressing his desire to donate his organs. "We wish to do something valuable."
The meeting between Cardinal Kim and the seven inmates was arranged by the Catholic Church, which is part of a pan-religious coalition that is campaigning for an end to the death penalty.
