Cheng Tai-chi was executed after his fourth appeal against his death sentence was rejected. He was accused of murdering a business rival in 1994 while he was Speaker of the County Council in Pingtung. Justice Minister Chen Ding-nan sanctioned the execution as part of the government 's intensified war against crime and corruption.
