CHINA. MAN SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR KINDERGARTEN KILLINGS

China sentenced to death Fu Hegong , a 31 year old man convicted of killing a teacher and a 5-year-old student in a kindergarten in a rampage of rape, robbery and acts of lewdness, the Beijing Youth Daily said. The murders took place in October 2004, when a teacher found Fu breaking into the school. He hit her in the head with a fire extinguisher, then raped her and smothered her with a quilt. The disturbance awakened a student spending the night in the school, and Fu bludgeoned the boy to death. He stole the school's DVD player, a bicycle, cash and other goods worth 570 yuan ($70). China's state-controlled media, which normally plays down reports of such attacks out of concern that they could reflect badly on the ruling Communist Party, gave unusually detailed coverage of Fu's sentencing.
