China accused Ching Cheong, a Hong Kong-based reporter for Singapore's Straits Times newspaper, of spying for foreign agencies. If convicted, Cheong, 55, could face the death penalty. He was detained April 22 in the southern city of Guangzhou. The Straits Times said it was shocked by the arrest, and Ching's wife said he was innocent.
