Circuit Judge Judy Pittman sentenced Roderick Michael Orme to death for the March 3, 1992 rape and murder of Lisa Redd. In May, 11 jurors had recommended a death sentence. Orme had already been sentenced to death for the same crime in 1993, but on February 24, 2005 the Florida  Supreme Court ordered a new penalty hearing because Orme’s lawyer didn't tell jurors his client was mentally ill, and sent him back to Bay County for a new penalty phase trial. At that time, the jury had voted 7-5 for the death penalty. This time the vote of the jury has been 11-1.
Orme, now 44, was convicted of murdering Lisa Redd when Redd, a nurse and Orme's former girlfriend, answered his call for aid during a drug binge. Redd came to Orme's motel room and determined that Orme needed help after ingesting crack cocaine and alcohol all day. When the victim threw the defendant's unused cocaine in the toilet, he became angry, and beat, raped and murdered her.
