CUBA. FOR SOME HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS, IT’S A HAPPY ISLAND, D’ELIA

Hands Off Cain responds to the petition signed by 200 intellectuals in defence of the Cuban regime by bringing at the forefront the grave violations of human rights perpetrated by Castro’s regime.
Those who backed the petition, including Nobel Laureates Josè Saramago,
Rigoberta Menchù, Adolfo Perez Esquivel and Nadine Gordimer affirm that in Cuba
there isn’t “a single case of disappearance, torture or extrajudicial execution”
According to Hands Off Cain Secretary Sergio D’Elia, “the letter does not take into account the reality in Cuba and the offences committed by the world’s longest serving dictator.”
“Cuba has two sides, one in the public eye and the other well hidden. For certain defenders of human rights only the first one exists: the one with the US base of Guantanamo where the Taliban are kept.”
“There isn’t only Guantanamo in Cuba,” continued D’Elia, “there is also Combinado del Este, Canaleta, La Pendiente, Ceramica Roja, Kilo 8. The Caribbean island is not all sun, sea and sand. Its also prison and centres for ‘re-education’”
Hands Off Cain would like to remind those who signed the pro-Castro petition and see Cuba as an island without a single case of torture, disappearance and extrajudicial execution, that on April 11, 2003 three Cuban men convicted of hijacking a passenger ferry with the intention of reaching Florida where executed three days after their conviction on April 8. In those three days they were convicted and sentenced to death, they had their appeals rejected by the Supreme Court and were then put to death by firing squad.
