Cyprus abolished the death penalty for ordinary crimes in 1983. The last execution was conducted in 1962, and carried out by hanging. On February 18 1999, the House of Representatives unanimously voted for the abolition of the death penalty under domestic law. The death penalty was maintained only for certain military offences: treason and piracy. The Turkish Cypriot Constitution abolished capital punishment except for military crimes.
