two-thirds of Czechs believed that the death penalty should be brought back and re-instated while less than a quarter said that it should not, according to a poll released by the CVVM agency.
Most Czechs would also like to see the age of criminal liability lowered from the age of 15 where it currently stood.
Some 28 percent of those polled in March said that there definitely should be the death penalty and another 38 said that they were inclined to be in favour of the death penalty.
Only nine percent said that they were definitely against the death penalty and another 18 percent said that they were inclined to be against the death penalty.
The number of people in favour of the death penalty dropped during the 1990s, but had wavered around the 60 percent mark since then.
Pensioners, non-religious people, those with less education and voters of the senior government Social Democrats (CSSD) and of the junior opposition Communist Party (KSCM) tended to be more in favour of the death penalty.
On the other hand, students, university graduates, Christians, and voters of the senior opposition Civic Democrats (ODS) and of the junior government Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) were less likely to be in favour of the death penalty. However, CVVM pointed out that the number of proponents of the death penalty outnumbered opponents in all groups across the board.
