Dana Seetahal, an independent legislator and former magistrate here told the Senate that she has been lobbying the Mercy Committee that is chaired by the Minister of National Security for a number of years to pardon convicted killers who had spent 16 years in jail and whom she considered to have been rehabilitated. "They pose no danger to society. I ask that their sentences be commuted," she said, noting that all death-row prisoners and those serving life sentences were entitled to have their cases reviewed every four years. Seetahal said that her attempts to get that done had been greeted with a simple acknowledgement of her letters from the National Security Ministry.
