Danish Defense Minister Soeren Gade said that his country's troops stationed in Iraq would suspend all hand-overs of prisoners there following the war-torn country's decision to reinstate the death penalty.
"We will not hand over anyone until we are sure that they (the prisoners) won't risk being sentenced to the capital punishment," Gade told national television channel TV2 following a meeting in Washington with his US counterpart Donald Rumsfeld.
Denmark has 500 soldiers based in Al-Qurna in the southern Basra region under British command. All prisoners captured by Danish troops had been handed over to British forces, if deemed a security threat to the coalition, or to Iraqi police, if suspected of general crimes. Gade said he feared British troops would hand the prisoners captured by Danish soldiers over to authorities in Baghdad and said he hoped to remove the uncertainty surrounding the issue.
