During his state visit to Nigeria, German President Johannes Rau criticised the fact that Islamic law was applied in the north of the country. It was dangerous if the impression was given that Shari'ah was stronger than the constitution, Rau stated during talks with the supreme federal judges in Abuja. They replied that no Shari'ah sentence had been executed so far.
