EGYPT: EXECUTED ISLAMIC TERRORIST HISHAM EL-ASHMAWY
On March 4,2020 it took place the execution of Hisham el-Ashmawy.
Hisham el-Ashmawy was sentenced to death, the first time in absentia in 2017 and then also in November 2019, for coordinating many terrorist operations. The list of charges against Ashmawy included: the attempted murder of the former Egyptian Minister of the Interior, Mohamed Ibrahim, on September 5, 2013; the assault on a desert checkpoint in Farafra in July 2014 (which caused the death of 28 frontier guards); the planning and implementation of commercial vessel targeting operations on the Suez Canal; smuggling and training for terrorist purposes; the murder of Karim Fouad, an investigative assistant in the El Alamein Police Department; the placement of a car bomb that killed the Egyptian Attorney General Hisham Barakat in Cairo in June 2015 and finally the explosion in front of the Italian Consulate in Cairo on July 11, 2015 which killed a peddler and injured a dozen people. The attacks were then claimed by Isis.
After being captured in Derna in October 2018 and sentenced to death by the Egyptian Military Court on November 27, 2019 (in case no. 1/2014), he was hanged on March 4, 2020.
