Equatorial Guinea's public prosecutor has urged a court to sentence to death or to 30 years, Felipe Ondo Obiang and Guillermo Nguema Ela, both leaders of the illegal Democratic Republican Force (FDR), and Emilio Ndong Biyogo of the Popular Union, a legalised opposition party.
The three are opposition leaders accused of plotting a coup. The three men are among over 100 people who went on trial for allegedly planning to topple President Teodoro Obiang Nguema in mid-March and seize power in the oil-producing central African state.
Opposition parties say the allegations were fabricated as a ruse to crack down on opponents and accuse security forces of torturing detainees, charges rejected by the government.
Most of the defendants, who were rounded up in a wave of arrests in March and April.
