a court in northern Ethiopia's Tigray Regional State found six Ethiopians, one of them a police constable, guilty of involvement in a bus bombing in northern Ethiopia on 13 March 2008, and sentenced to death and jail term ranging from 20 years to life imprisonment.
The court, temporarily sitting in the northern town of Setit Humera, also found the accused of being members of "terrorists bent on subverting the Ethiopian constitution" and engaging in illegal arms trade. The court sentenced three of the accused to death, two to life imprisonment and one to 20-year jail term.
The court also found that four of the accused had been in contact with senior Eritrean army commanders by crossing the border into Eritrea. The death sentences will be executed once President Girma Woldegiorgis assents to them.
Nine people were killed and 26 others sustained serious and minor injuries when a bomb exploded in the bus they were travelling in from Humera to Shire Inda Silase in northern Ethiopia.
