Ferzana K., a convicted Pakistani drug dealer had her death sentence commuted to life imprisonment by the Fujairah Appeal Court in the United Arab Emirates. Ferzana said in court she had been the victim of a plot by her stepfather and was not aware of the contents of the bag she was carrying. 
Judges were not convinced by her story and retained the guilty verdict of the emirate's Sharia court, which said she had been dealing in drugs. She was arrested when police responded to a tip from a member of the public who said a woman was selling drugs in Ras Al Khaimah. A bag found in her possession turned out to contain 150 grams of cannabis.
Her lawyer, speaking after the appeal court hearing, said: "We presented our defence in the court trying to convince the judges that our client was a victim of a trap that was set up by her stepfather to get rid of her.
"He asked her to deliver a bag full of drugs without telling her its contents."
Ferzana, who was living in Dibba Al Fujairah, claimed her stepfather had set up the trap, even to the extent that he approached an undercover police agent to have her arrested. Fujairah Police received a tip that a Pakistani woman was selling cannabis on the East Coast. An undercover police agent contacted her and set up a time and place to carry out a drug deal. When she arrived, she was greeted by a team of police officers who confiscated the bag containing drugs.
