For the second time the Supreme Court voided the hanging sentences issued to six members of the Basij, a militant Islamic group of the Iranian regime, thought to be responsible for the murder of five people they had accused of committing "immoral" acts.
The sentences had originally been issued on March 11, 2003, in Kerman in the south of the country where the crimes had allegedly taken place. One of their victims, a 19 year old man believed to be a drug dealer, was buried alive following their failed attempt to drown him in a well throwing stones at his head.

The Supreme court had annulled the sentences at the beginning of September, stating that their confessions had been extracted by torture.
The court thus ordered the case back to the Kerman tribunal asking it to review the case. On October 16 the court had re-sentenced the six to death.
