Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Anne Gazeau-Secret said the French consul in Houston, speaking for all 15 European Union states, had intervened several times on behalf of Gary Graham, who went to his death proclaiming his innocence after Texas Governor George W. Bush ignored last-minute appeals to call off the execution. "We especially regret that the authorities in Texas knowingly took the risk of putting an innocent man to death," Gazeau-Secret said.
The French government said it was "dismayed" after convicted murderer Gary Graham was executed in the US and stressed that this issue would be "one of the priorities" of its presidency of the European Union. The EU had "stressed the fact that Gary Graham was a minor at the time of the crime of which he was accused".
