Former counterculture guru Ira Einhorn, sheltering in France to avoid serving a life term for murdering his girlfriend in America, said he was a symbol of all death row inmates in the U.S. "What I represent are 4,000 death row inmates in America who were sentenced because of their colour, or because they were poor or for their ideas. I will fight till the end to remain free for the rest of my life," he said. Einhorn, now 60, jumped bail and went into hiding 17 years ago, just before he was to be tried in the murder of Helen "Holly" Maddux, whose decomposed body was found in a trunk in his Philadelphia apartment in 1979, some 18 months after she disappeared. Einhorn insisted he was framed. But a Philadelphia court convicted him in absentia and sentenced him to life imprisonment in 1993. Einhorn's lawyer Dominique Delthil said he would send Prime Minister Lionel Jospin a petition asking he not sign the extradition order against Einhorn, but it could be some months before he handed down his decision.
