Four inmates out of the 12 on death row in Swaziland had their death sentences commuted to life-terms, to be served until they reach 75 years of age. They were pardoned by His Majesty King Mswati III under the king's prerogative of mercy.
The pardons followed the king's successful celebration of his birthday on 14 September, and the passing out parade of correctional recruits in the same month.
The pardoned death row inmates were Michael Mavusu, Beki Gama, George Jabulani Lukhele, and Sifiso Nkosi.
Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Chief Maven Simelane said that under a general amnesty all convicted inmates who were in the correctional institutions on 28 September 2001, had their sentences reduced by five or three months, except for the death row prisoners.
