France is in a state of shock and anger after the election success of the extreme Right under Jean-Marie Le Pen.
The final scores, with 99% of the vote counted, were 19.6% for incumbent Jacques Chirac, 16.9% for Le Pen, and 16% for Socialist prime minister Jospin.
Heavily-armed Paris riot police clashed with protesters as 10,000 demonstrated against Le Pen's hardline anti-immigration policies. There were similar protests in Strasbourg, Toulouse, Grenoble and towns and cities across France. Many carried signs reading "I am ashamed" and "down with fascism".
Le Pen, who advocates the return of the death penalty and priority for French nationals in jobs, housing and social benefits, urged anti-Europe voters to back him in the second round on May 5.
