Navarro County jurors decided in 1989 Sterling should be put to death for the beating death of John Carty, 72, killed in May 1988.
Sterling, who was 20 at the time, also led police to the bodies of William Porter, 72, Porter's brother, Leroy, 71, and Delores Smith, 52. He pleaded guilty to the slayings of the Porter brothers, and received 2 life prison terms. He was never tried for Smith’ slaying.
Sterling becomes the 11th condemned prisoner executed this year in Texas and the. 34th in the USA.
