German businessman Helmut Hofer returned home from Iran, where he spent two years on death row for having illicit sex with a Moslem woman. Hofer was originally sentenced to death on charges of illicit sex with a 27-year-old unmarried Iranian medical student, the penalty under Iran's Islamic laws for a non-Moslem man who has sexual relations with a Moslem woman out of wedlock. However, the Supreme Court overturned the ruling and Hofer laid a fine in lieu of lashes for a lesser sex charge.
