Gov. Rick Perry commuted to life in prison the sentence for Doil Edward Lane. The Board of Pardons and Paroles recommended Lane's death's sentence be commuted to life behind bars. Lane was sent to death row for the 1980 killing of Bertha Martinez. The defence claimed Lane is mentally retarded, and a judge in Hays County last year agreed, making him ineligible to be executed.
