Governor Thorold Masefield signed the bill abolishing the death penalty and flogging in Bermuda.
The bill had been passed by 19 votes in favour and 13 against in the Bermudan House of Assembly on December 16, 1999, after a heated debate that lasted throughout the night.
In turn, the Senate voted the bill by a narrow margin (6-5) on December 20, 1999. (see 1999)
