Hajiya Aisha Ismail, Nigeria's minister of women's affairs, expressed confidence that a woman convicted of adultery and condemned to be stoned to death by an Islamic court would be acquitted.
The minister said the federal government would take Safiya Husaini's case to the supreme court if she were not.
"Many people wanted the government just to stop Safiya from being killed without bothering to prove anything," said Ismail, a progressive Muslim.
"But we decided not to save Safiya by fiat (decree), which would have implied the judgment was right and that we were just helping Safiya because we felt sorry for her."We are setting a precedent that will prevent extremists from raising this kind of issue in the future."
