Hands Off Cain appealed to the media, political parties and citizens aware of the death penalty issue to campaign in favour of four Iranian women, who like Amina Lawal in Nigeria, were condemned to death by stoning.
Four Iranian women, identified by Iranian media only by their first names - Sima, Shanas, Ferdous and Ashraf - may be executed any day.
Hands Off Cain noted that there have been no popular protests or boycotts and no breaking-off of economic relations by the European Union with Iran, a country where that has been executing people on a daily basis.
Whereas, Nigeria was being shunned for a death-by-stoning sentence that in all probability will never be carried out, many women like Amina are being stoned to death in Iran even under President Mohammed Khatami's reformist government. Seventeen women have been stoned to death since his election in 1997, and another four are in prison awaiting their fate- amidst the general indifference.
