Hands Off Cain has sent an appeal to Joseph Kabila, president of the Democratic Republic of Congo to commute the death sentences passed on at least 26 people convicted on January 7 of his father's -Laurent Kabila- murder two years ago. HOC Secretary General Sergio D'Elia and board member Elisabetta Zamparutti met Charge d'Affaires Ngoie Benoie at the DRC's embassy in Rome. He assured that the letter would be transmitted directly to Kinshasa, and the meeting was described as "very positive" by the HOC delegation. HOC, recognising the particularly difficult position that President Kabila finds himself in dealing with a case that touches him so closely, asked him to use his power "to carry out a gesture of great significance to all humankind" by conceding a pardon to all the people condemned to die on 7th January 2003 and re-imposing a legal moratorium on executions.
