Hands off Cain launched the third Annual Report on the death penalty situation in the world. The year 2000 issue was dedicated to Pope John Paul II, a leading figure in the fight against capital punishment and the defence of those condemned to death in 1999. Present at the launch were association secretary Sergio d'Elia, report editor Elisabetta Zamparutti, European Parliamentarian Emma Bonino, Senate Vice-President Ersilia Salvato, and Ambassador Claudio Moreno, currently at the helm of the Department for Human Rights at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Also present were Rolando Cruz, a former Illinois death row inmate set free after being proved innocent, and former Italian Constitutional Court president Giovanni Conso. The European Union term president, Portugal, was represented by Jose Costa Pereira, director of the Department for Human Rights at the Portuguese Foreign Ministry.
