Hassan Faylom, 39, was hanged in public outside Tehran's Qasr prison, for killing his wife, Fatemeh, 24, and his 19-month old daughter, Melika, stabbing them 41 times "in order to satisfy his lust and that of his lover Mojgan". Judge in the Tehran Justice Department decided that the execution should take place in public "because of the aggravating circumstance of hurting public sentiment that characterized his crime". His decision was confirmed by the Iranian Supreme Court. Faylom, handcuffed and dressed in a grey prison uniform, was led out of the prison to a crane mounted on a truck. A red noose was placed around his neck. The crowd fell silent as a judicial official ordered the crane driver to hoist Faylom. Some spectators murmured verses from the Muslim holy book, the Quran, as his body was lifted 30 feet off the ground. It remained suspended for 10 minutes.
