HOC president Marco Pannella MEP, criticised the centre-right Casa delle Liberta, or House of Freedoms, majority in Parliament for the "compact vote" that failed to commit the government to present to the UN General Assembly currently in session a resolution for a worldwide moratorium on executions.
He thanked the opposition for its coherent support for the moratorium cause.
"Though comprehending the difficulty of understanding the government's behaviour on this issue, we cannot but express our regret with regard to this apparently compact vote," Pannella said.
"The moratorium was the basis of a great humanitarian battle announced by Prime Minister Berlusconi and Deputy PM Fini on a number of occasions and in various fora that has now fizzled out into an unspeakable kind of political and civil attitude.
"On the other hand we recognise with sincere appreciation the opposition MPs steadfast affirmation of their declared principles demonstrated by their contrary vote."
