"If we want to join the European Union, we must rid ourselves of the death penalty," Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said in an interview about the [Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK) leader Abdullah] Ocalan affair. Due consideration must be given to the European Court of Human Rights' demand to postpone the execution of the Kurdish leader, he added and predicted that "the public's reactions could subside with time" (the victims of terror attacks by the PKK are demanding that Ocalan be condemned to death and executed) and we could arrive at a "positive solution for Turkey".
