In a televised debate Prime Minister Milos Zeman (Czech Social Democratic Party) said he was against the death penalty being re-established in the Czech Republic to handle the most serious cases. He said he supported the life sentence as the top punishment. However his chief advisor Miroslav Slouf (CSSD), said in a debate on another channel that he believed the death penalty could become the capital punishment in exceptional cases. The debate was sparked off by the escape of Jiri Kajinek, a contract killer sentenced to life imprisonment, from Mirov, a high security prison in north Moravia.
