In December, at a Kabul soccer stadium, a woman identified solely as Zarmeena, her face covered by a blue "burka," was shot before about 4,000 people. The mother of seven children, she was convicted for killing her husband four months previously. This was the first public execution of a woman since Islamic seminarians assumed power in Afghanistan. Judges said she admitted to the crime, but an NGO claimed she was tortured.
