in Greenville, a jury has again sentenced a man to die for killing a convenience store clerk in 1997.
Freddie Eugene Owens, 28, was first convicted in 1999 for killing Irene Grainger Graves during a convenience store holdup.
He was sentenced to die after that conviction, but the state Supreme Court granted him a new sentencing trial in 2001, saying the trial judge should have given defense attorneys time to prepare a response to evidence presented against Mr. Owens during the sentencing phase of his trial.
He was again sentenced to die in 2003, but that also was overturned because of judge's error. Circuit Judge Larry Patterson has not set a confirmation date.
Mr. Owens also has been charged with killing a fellow inmate in 1999 while awaiting sentencing in Ms. Graves' killing.
