In his New Year's message, South African President Thabo Mbeki called on all South Africans to play a part in fighting the scourge of child rapes in the country. The recent spate of child rapes shocked the country in recent months, prompting calls for the reinstatement of capital punishment.
But Mbeki said earlier that capital punishment would not solve the crime problem in South Africa.
