In Japan a House of Councillors plenary session unanimously approved an extradition treaty between Japan and South Korea to take effect during the month-long World Cup soccer finals starting on May 31.
The World Cup co-hosts are expected to exchange instruments of ratification soon to enable the extradition treaty to go into effect sometime in June, government officials said.
The treaty stipulates that Japan and South Korea will in principle be obliged to extradite each other's nationals at the request of the other party over crimes that call for the death penalty, life imprisonment or detention for more than one year based on their respective domestic laws. Political crimes, however, will not be included.
