In Los Angeles, Angelina Rodriguez, 35, was sentenced to death by Superior Court Judge William R. Pounders, who went along with the jury's recommendation that Rodriguez be executed for poisoning her husband with antifreeze- spiked Gatorade to try to collect on a $250,000 life insurance policy. Rodriguez will become the 15th woman on death row in California. "The court finds by overwhelming evidence that on September 9, 2000, the defendant administered poison to her husband, Jose Francisco Rodriguez, to cause his death for the purpose of financial gain," Pounders said. She disputed allegations that she may have been responsible for the 1993 death of her 13-month-old daughter, who was found with a pacifier nipple in her throat. "Defendant's calculated murder of her 13-month-old daughter by altering a pacifier, suffocating her and then blaming the death on the manufacturer to collect 60 percent of the net proceeds of a $710,000 settlement reflected her desire to murder family members for financial gain," the judge said. Pounders noted that the woman had tried earlier to kill her husband "by loosening a gas connection that exposed neighbors and others to the risk of death or serious injury from a gas explosion." Rodriguez was convicted last Oct. 29 of 1st-degree murder for her husband's poisoning death. Deputy District Attorney Doug Sortino said Rodriguez used the oleander plant to sicken her 41-year-old husband, then finished him off by putting antifreeze in his Gatorade while supposedly nursing him back to health.
