John Steven Gardner was found guilty of capital murder Thursday in a state district court in McKinney before state District Judge Curt Henderson.
Prosecutors say that Mr. Gardner shot his wife of 5 years, Tammy Dawn Gardner, because she was seeking a divorce.
In the trial's punishment phase jurors learned that in 1983 Mr. Gardner pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in the shooting death of a previous wife, Rhoda Gay Gardner, who was 18 and pregnant. Mr. Gardner was 26 at the time.
